“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The words uttered by the Psalmist were repeated by Jesus a thousand years later, as He hung on a cross. The question shouldn’t be lost on us. Why was He forsaken? Why did God turn His face away when His Son was so alone? Actually, it was because of us. Your sin and my sin and the sin of the world was carried by Jesus and crucified. He took our sin upon Himself and God judged it. The wages of sin is death, and so Jesus died for us all. Sin so awful, so absolutely rebellious, that God put it to death by laying it all upon the Son He loved. And here’s the thing. He did it because He loves us. Jesus died in our place and paid our debt. Why was He forsaken? So that you and I wouldn’t be. That dear friend, is love.
